Slices in Suggest
Slices surface dynamic and interactive capabilities from an app directly in Google Autocomplete on Android. Slices help users quickly complete tasks using their apps, like call a Lyft ride or adjust their Nest thermostat.
Background
Today, Android users can navigate to content on the web and on their phones via Suggest (also known as Autocomplete) in the Quick Search Box. Users can search the web or find contacts, apps, and even in-app content (like a podcast on Spotify). As people use apps more frequently to get things done, our team began to focus on how to accelerate users’ in-app tasks via Suggest.
In collaboration with the Android team, we helped build out Slices to allow users to complete actions within their apps directly from Suggest. We demoed Slices at I/O in 2018 and launched publicly in 2019.
Role
I was the lead interaction designer on Suggest, working closely with a product manager and several engineers on our core team and collaborating with product, design, and engineering partners on the Android team.
